New Jersey became the first state to surpass $1 billion in sports betting in a single month in September.
New Jersey took in $1.01 billion in wagers that month to break its own U.S. record of $996.3 million set in December 2020, according to sbcamericas.com.
The total was up 35.1 percent from the $748.6 million generated in September 2020.
"The state's gaming industry has seemingly run out of ways to surprise, but sportsbooks reaching $1 billion in monthly handle is a reminder that there is no gaming market in the U.S. that is playing on New Jersey's level," PlayUSA.com analyst Eric Ramsey said. "The relentless growth in online sports betting and casino gaming continues to lift the entire industry."
Football wagering accounted for $400.8 million of New Jersey's record-setting September total, with baseball bets totaling $185.2 million.
Bettors wagered $918.4 million through online sportsbooks, roughly 91 percent of the statewide handle. Another $92.7 million came through retail sportsbooks.
