NEW YORK, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Democrat Mikie Sherrill was elected Tuesday as the 57th governor of New Jersey, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state legislator.

The state was one of two in the United States to elect governors this November, along with Virginia, where Democrat Abigail Spanberger also won.

The New Jersey race was viewed as a bellwether for voter sentiment toward President Donald Trump, the outlook for the 2026 congressional midterms, and broader attitudes toward incumbent leaders.

Outgoing Democratic Governor Phil Murphy is completing his second consecutive term. Under state law, governors serve four-year terms and may serve multiple times, but not more than two in a row.
