Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Brendan Smith will be sidelined three-to-four months after surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee, the team announced Thursday.

Smith, who had the surgery on Tuesday, sustained the injury during a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Dec. 29.

Smith, 36, recorded two assists and 11 penalty minutes in 15 games this season.

He has totaled 146 points (39 goals, 107 assists) and 798 penalty minutes in 741 career games with the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Dallas Stars and Blue Jackets. He was selected by the Red Wings with the 27th overall pick of the 2007 NHL Draft.
